Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that takes place over the course of one or two appointments, depending on the progression of your gum disease. First, we’ll scale your teeth and thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from their surfaces, as far down as the pockets of the gums. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots by removing any hardened bacteria deposits. This will allow your gums to reattach to your teeth, protecting the roots from becoming damaged.
Periostat®
Antibiotic Therapy
In combination with scaling and root planing, we typically also recommend Periostat antibiotic therapy. This medication is doxycycline hyclate and comes in the form of capsules that you can take daily to help your body fight off the oral infection. We’ll determine the length of your treatment before prescribing your medication to you and have you come in for regular follow-up appointments to make sure you’re seeing the expected effects of the medication.
